What is clandestine abortion and what can be done to mitigate this fast becoming public health concern?

A webinar to understand the concept of clandestine abortion and how it narrowed its way into the Cameroon health system was organized by Dynamic Femme via Google meet on Wednesday 27th August 2025 at 9:30 AM. The participants were expected to understand what clandestine abortion is all about, its consequence and how it can be solved.

During the meeting, it was unanimously acclaimed that getting an unwanted pregnancy is something which have come to stay. No matter how we sensitize people and take measures, it’s impossible to eradicate this problem completely. It is rather unfortunate that most of these unwanted pregnancies end up in a clandestine abortion. The good news that we all agreed on at the meeting is that we can somehow try to limit the prevalence of clandestine abortion.

Some of the measures we can all take to solve this fast becoming public health concern according to the guest on board include;

 Teenage pregnancy. Imagining a young girl her teen age who gets pregnant and her organs are not fully developed. Letting her put to birth brings her to great danger, one of which is maternal and infant death. As such the presenter thinks that if teenagers who in the process of experiencing life gets pregnant and desire to have an abortion should be allowed to do so. This is because, if access is denied they will still go behind and try to do it using very dangerous measures.

 Another case that the presenter presented was the case of a woman who puts to birth and after a few months, finds out she is pregnant again. According to him, these women will do everything possible to get rid of the pregnancy. As such, instead of letting them go endanger their lives by trying to do it illegally, the government could actually make this one of the exceptions to have access to safe abortion.

 The last but not the least proposal he made was in case of incest. A brother sister relationship or a father daughter relationship that leads to pregnancy should be granted access to safe abortion. The offspring might come with health difficulties because of the same genes. The problem of misplaced identity of the child might come up when the child grows. At this point it would have been preferred that the pregnancy be terminated an early stage.

None the less, there should be a time frame that the pregnancy should be terminated, later than that it could be considered as murder.
The lessons drawn from this webinar include;

 Restrictions to safe abortion access don’t limit clandestine abortion, but rather pave way for more abortions that are unsafe.

 Some exceptions should be added to the already existing ones to reduce the rate of clandestine abortion.

 Emphasis should be laid on sensitization campaigns concerning the dangers of clandestine abortion.

 Normalize talking about access to safe abortion as one of the ultimate solutions to clandestine abortion.

The meeting ended at 10:30. In summery it was an interesting session with participants expressing the desire to be part of the subsequent editions.

Clandestine abortion and access to safe abortion

Clandestine abortion refers to the voluntary termination of a pregnancy illegally. This definition is in the lay man terms for easy understanding.

Under the project pledge for the development of policies and adoption of a law in favor to safe abortion access in Cameroon, a study was carried out in the four socio cultural corners of Cameroon.

The result of this study proves that, in 100 percent abortion cases recorded amongst the people that were interviewed, 68 percent were voluntary and the women did not show any remorse as they stated that if the opportunity presented itself again they won’t hesitate to do it.

In this 68 percent of women who were interviewed, it was noticed that those who practice most of those abortions are married women with a percentage of 36.80. Second were single ladies who are scared of raising kids by themselves with a percentage of 30.80 and in third position are divorced women with a percentage of 9.75

The graphs below illustrates it best

Unwanted pregnancy seems to be something which has come to stay despite the sensitization campaigns and teachings on how to avoid unwanted pregnancies. To this effect, even in a thousand years to come, it is evident that women will still practice abortions. The question is, will the abortions be safe or unsafe? It’s important that we amplify the fight against clandestine abortion to save more women.

Since November 2024, Dynamic Femmes has been carrying out a series of activities to raise awareness on the dangers of clandestine abortion and seek possible solutions to this fast becoming public health concern. one of these activities is webinars which are organised atleast ones every month.

Pledge for the development of policies and adoption of a law in favor to safe abortion access in Cameroon

In Cameroon, it is difficult to say how many girls and women die or develop very complicated health problems as a result of clandestine abortion unless one has conducted a thorough research and gotten the right statistics. Getting these statistics right is a great problem because for some reasons, people don’t talk about their abortion experiences. These reasons include the fact that, abortion is an illegal practice in Cameroon and so victims feel intimidated and fear being incarcerated.

Another reason which has been observed as to why people hardly speak about abortion experiences in the society if because of religion, cultural and family background restriction. The fear of being looked down on by the society because one committed an abortion pushes victims to clandestine abortion.

In a study published by the international federation of gynecologist and obstetrics abbreviated as FIGO, they state that, “legal restrictions on abortion do not reduce the problem of abortions but rather pave way for more abortions that are unsafe. Organizations and groups of people have embarked on a journey of research on this particular topic but no matter how they try; the results have not been fully satisfying. This is where Dynamic femmes steps in.

Amplify Change has sponsored a project with Dynamic Femmes being the main actor. This project aims to pledge for laws and policies that will enable women and girls have access to safe abortion there by fighting the problem of clandestine abortion in Cameroon. During this project, Dynamic Femmes aims to equip the team and key actors of the project with essential knowledge on the concept of “Do No Harm”. This means that they should be able to handle cases of post clandestine abortion without making the victims feel responsible or guilty of their current situation. Reach out to as many girls and woman as possible who have lived the horror of clandestine abortion with the intention of recording enough statistics that other projects have not been able to attain. Dynamic Femmes will equally be creative in their communication strategies, using mean stream Medias and social Media. The result of this project is to enable law makers in Cameroon to see reasons why safe abortion access is a must and not an option.
